He began umpiring in April of 1960 and continued until he retired in September of 1987 a career of 27 years. He umpired his first ASA state tournament in 1964 in the women’s slow-pitch league at Southland Park.

Officiating both league and tournament play he averaged over 300 games a year totaling in excess of an amazing eight thousand ball games.

His excellent judgment and ability to make the coaches and players feel he was fair with everyone on the field made him renowned for being able to run a softball game without incident.

He officiated over 75 state tournaments, 15 Midwest regional tournaments, and one national championship tournament.
