THIS AWARD IS IN RECOGNITION OF OUTSTANDING ABILITY AS A FAST-PITCH SOFTBALL PLAYER, TEAM CAPTAIN, TEAM MANAGER, AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE SPORT OF SOFTBALL. BILL IS KNOWN AS SOFTBALL GOODWILL AMBASSADOR FOR NORTHERN KENTUCKY AND IS IN THE NORTHERN KENTUCKY HALL OF FAME. HE HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN SOFTBALL FOR 57 YEARS AND IS STILL ACTIVE.

BILL, AN EASYGOING INFIELDER, WAS PLAYER/MANAGER OF THE OAKWOOD NIGHT CLUB FAST PITCH TEAM WHICH WON THE 1933 KENTUCKY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BY BEATING THE GREENTREE STABLES OF LEXINGTON IN THE FINAL GAME, AND HIS TEAM ADVANCED TO THE CHICAGO NATIONAL TOURNAMENT. IN 1939, CAPPEL WAS CAPTAIN AND PLAYED SECOND BASE AND SHORT STOP FOR NICK CARR’S BOOSTERS WHO WON THE KENTUCKY STATE TITLE AND THE NATIONAL FAST PITCH TOURNAMENT AT SOLDIERS FIELD IN CHICAGO.

HE WAS IN THE ARMY FROM 1942-1945 AND RECEIVED THE LEGION OF MERIT IN ADDITION TO OTHER COMBAT AWARDS. IN THE EARLY 50’S HE ORGANIZED A WOMEN’S FAST PITCH LEAGUE AND A SLOW PITCH LEAGUE. THREE OF HIS SLOW PITCH TEAMS WON THE NATIONAL TITLE.

IN 1975, THE CITY OF COVINGTON NAMED TWO BALL FIELDS IN HIS HONOR AND HE RECEIVED A KEY TO THE CITY. BILL HAS ENDEARED HIMSELF IN EVERY PHASE OF THE GAME FROM WATER BOY TO THE TOP. HE IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE MOST DEVOTED OF SOFTBALL PARTICIPANTS AND DESERVES EVERY HONOR AVAILABLE.

BILL’S NAME SHALL FOREVER BE IN THE KENTUCKY SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME
