In 1974, while serving in the latter part of his 23-year career in the US
Navy, he attended his first ASA umpiring school in Naples, Italy. In the
spring of the following year, he began his umpiring career in earnest
calling his first games in Greece. He culminated his military umpiring
career by calling the Mediterranean Sports Tournament held in Spain.
After retiring from the service, he returned to his hometown of Bowling
Green, Kentucky where he resumed his umpiring career joining the
Bowling Green Athletic Association in the spring of 1979. He was the
president of the BG Umpires Association from 1980 through 1985 and
was District Umpire-In-Chief from 1983 through 1985. He continued to
umpire regularly until 1990.
While in Bowling Green, he has umpired various levels in both adult and
youth slow and fast pitch softball. He has officiated in league, district,
regional, and national regional play including the prestigious Spring
Classic.
He umpired on a more limited basis through the Kentucky High School
Athletic Association in slow pitch since 1983 and fast pitch since 1995.
He retired from officiating in 1998.
